ROCHDALE LIGHT ORCHESTRA Founded 2008
It was in the spring of 2008 that a group of musicians responded to my invitation to get together to form an orchestra that would play music of a light-hearted nature. We were able to meet in the community room of St. Martin's Church in Castleton, Rochdale. For a couple of years we met on Monday evenings and rehearsed a wide range of pieces I arranged for the players we had. We gave several concerts during this time, all of which were well attended and gave much pleasure both to the players and the audiences.
After a period of enforced silence, we are making music again, and have already given one very successful public concert in November 2016.
It's now 2017, we are rehearsing again on Wednesdays in St. Michael's, Bamford, and we are working towards a Concert on Friday, May 26th at 8.00pm in St. Michael's. Nikki Booth, a concert pianist who was once a member of the orchestra, will be returning to Rochdale to play Haydn's Piano Concerto in G with us and some solo pieces as well.
The programme will include Montmartre by Haydn Wood, Rastus on Parade by Kerry Mils, Gounod's Funeral March for a Marionette, one or two arrangements of songs by Jerome Kern and others, and movements from Handel's Water Music Suite.
Full details nearer the time.
If you are interested, please come along and join us. New players are always welcome.
